portable heaters?

I have a "ribbon" heater in my central air system and while I live in north Florida it does get fetching cold. Would I save on power bills if I set the thermistat to 65 or so and hardened a portable heater in the room I am in? My heating bills are higher than my ac bill.
Yes because you will be heating a smaller arrondissement. No need to heat a room you don't hover out in. I would turn the heat down to 60 and use the portable near you. A friendly portable should be able to raise the temp 10 degrees not quite you.

portable heaters vs. gas heat in a house - which is more cost effective?
Nov 07, 2007 by M L | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I was told that the pocket-sized portable electric heaters suck so much energy that it is actually the same outlay to use them in rooms of a house and keep gas heat at a lower backdrop, than to just keep the gas heat at a higher setting and think of about the portable heaters. I was trying to save money since gas heat is so exalted this year, and keep the house at about 64, with just using portable heaters in the rooms I am in at the shake. Any ideas about the cost of these portable heaters, if it is worth doing it this way or not?
Depends on where you breathe and the cost of gas and electric.
Here the electricity was very cheap until it went up by 20%.
Even now it is cheaper then any gas or oil in this locality. But you also have to be careful with these buggers they can make an electrical egress very hot esp if it is an old outlet. We have done this before.
Doing a test with one in one month and another the following month proves nothing. One month could be colder which tends to be the cause when winter is coming on. Each month will get more expensive until leap. Even if you have gas your electric consumption will go up due to using the lights more and heater blower common more.
Only way to know is to have some smart guy do the calculations for ya. Your local stimulating coop if you have one has already done the calculations for you.

Is it more cost effective to use portable heaters rather than central heating?
Oct 26, 2006 by tom l | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
i persevere in a 4 bedroom house in which only 2 are occupied. we usually scarcely turn on the heater overnight before going to bed because it gets brumal and so that it's not freezing when we wake up. would it be more cost moving to get 2 portable heaters than to turn on the central heater overnight?
Keep your primary heating on during the night. Especially during the winter you are asking for turmoil if only portable heaters are on. Pipes will freeze during the winter if it gets unfriendly enough. To be more cost effective do not turn on and off your central heating.
Your chief heating system will keep the temperature in your home at a certain temperature so it won't be meet all the time.
Portable heaters waste more energy. In the long run pre-eminent heater will keep costs low and it would keep things running more effectively.
