It was in the mid-1980s that Eric Drexler explored the suggestion of ‘molecular manufacturing’ through a deterministic, rather than stochastic, passage to handling individualistic atoms and molecules. The disclosure in 1985 of in the main buckyball carbon molecules (‘fullerenes’) by Harold Kroto and others (Nobel Jackpot 1996) and the techniques that followed to disclose gram quantities of fullerenes and to put nanotubes have now made Drexler’s sight realisable. A few valuable findings in nanotechnology and their applications have emerged from Indian laboratories also.

The capacity technological burden of another radical conception has not yet been fully realised. This is the invention of oxide-based boisterous-temperature superconductor (HTS). The first revelation of an yttrium-barium-copper-oxide (YBCO) based-HTS, which breached the 30 K (-243°C) obstacle of old hat low temperature superconductors, was made in 1986 (Nobel Value 1987) by Johannes Bednorz and Karl Mueller of IBM, Zurich. This led to the development of a whole stock of cuprate materials that became superconducting even above the liquid nitrogen temperature of 77 K (-196°C), and range-temperature superconductivity swiftly seemed workable. However, the latter has proved to be strenuous and the primitive bond of HTS for widespread effort too has not materialised. This may be because the identity theory of superconductivity in these layered materials is not yet fully agreed. In the 1970s and 1980s, biotechnology made lightning-fast strides in concepts and techniques.
