Thursday 21st June 2007 - A Chest Arrival and a Perfect Swim


The Amalfi Coast presents itself to me differently every on occasion I come here. I suppose that’s one of the reasons I keep returning.

I have a special scheme here this time, though. I’ve been offered a chance to show my paintings and drawings from the last three years in a site where their unashamedly literal and descriptive character may be an asset. La Buca di Bacco, (“Bacchus' Den“) is a restaurant on the crucial beach’s piazza. In April, as I sat drawing after my meal there, its supervisor Davide, with the permission of the owner Elio, invited me to use the Conwinum Gallery, downstairs, to show my travail. The only condition was that the pictures must all be on local subjects.


July 7th was the earliest epoch that I could agree to, because I was committed to take part in Surrey Open Studios. I already had a series of at liberty gouache paintings of views of the area at home, but I needed at least eight new canvases, on a reasonably unconfined scale, to fill the walls of the gallery. I had scores of sketches, photos and drawings.
