We have adapted to HEPA Filtration in our products for years. They are a very well filter that offers up to 99.999 % efficiency of filtering out the proper to pollutants. They work on the same theory as your home filters in your quarter - air passes through them and the particles are caught. Big trick is - if it bypasses the sift it leaves just as dirty.
But more importantly, it sounds like you're wondering what they are tolerant of for - in home use would be in a smokers home, a person with allergies, someone who fries a lot - someone with pets, etc. Anywhere that you extraordinarily want to get a better filtration of your air.
